First, The Glory

intros-at-toledo-match

This was the easy video. The small gym at Northern Illinois, seating only about 800, was perhaps half full. The Bobcats were clearly ready to go, they were having fun, the wind was blowing hard outside, but inside it was mostly going our way.

Toledo handed us a 3-1 defeat earlier in the season, but we rose up and took care of them Friday night, at our first match at the MAC Championships.

Wild Ride Against Bowling Green

mal-and-brooke-sr-night

Our two seniors, Mal Salis and Brooke Coleman, on Senior Night in the Convo.

We had a soul-satisfying match against Bowling Green that night. But the path to victory was uneven, and the third set was epic in its disappointment. Mighty glad to see us pull it out.

Passing and Killing

November 3rd, 2016 by John Thorndike

Here’s a video comprised of clips from several recent matches. I wanted to treat the team’s passing, as the bedrock of volleyball play. Then again, I open the video with some crushing blocks—by both us and our opponents—to show how less-than-great passes can lead to trouble. Then we continue to passes, then on to kills by both Jamie and Mal. Mal, especially, as I had wound up with a streak of Salis kills from the backcourt. I never know for sure what I’m going to come up with when videotaping a match. Afterward I look over the clips, and sometimes a theme emerges. What fun, in any case, to slow things down and see how plays unfold.

See you tomorrow night for the Miami match.

Middle Hitters and Middle Blockers Video

October 14th, 2016 by John Thorndike

This has become an annual endeavor: to show the trials of the middle hitter, and especially of the middle blocker. You’ll see, over and over, how the middles of either team guess wrong, in their attempt to double-block the outside or offside hitter. Then, with Mal and Jamie, the other team’s middle has to defend against an attack from the back row—not to mention the danger that on any play, Steph or Katelyn might dump the ball.

No wonder Shelby Walker said last year that the outside hitter position was “so restful,” compared to a middle’s job.

It looks to me like the most difficult job on the team. The setter makes as many decisions, but she’s almost always on the attack. It’s the defense that tries one’s attention and quickness. As I say in the video, there’s no middle blocker who doesn’t get fooled, at least some of the time. We fooled Paige Hill from Miami, then we fooled Drew Norberg from Kent State—and they are great players. Well, that’s our job, and we’re doing it pretty well.

First MAC Victory

brooke-passing

A solid performance against Akron, in our first match for 2016 within the MAC Conference. First Brooke Coleman passes the ball, then Ali Lake crushes it. Or that’s how it seemed to go, over and over. Here’s the video:

MAC Play Starts Tonight

September 23rd, 2016 by John Thorndike

Lots going on with the team, as Coach Webb has moved freshman Lizzie Stephens into the hitting slot opposite Jaime, and Mal is our new libero. Seems to me that we’re loaded for bear in our defensive positions.

Should be an interesting night against Akron, and tomorrow against Buffalo.

MatchPointOhio has been overwhelmed by other life. (You mean there’s life outside volleyball?) But our stills and videos have been going up, and the videos, so far, are listed on the 2016 Match Videos link in the sidebar to the right.
