MatchPointOhio celebrates the Ohio University women's volleyball team. The Bobcats, with their six All-Americans, have been the dominant varsity sport at O.U., winning more of its Mid-American Conference tournament and conference championships than any other MAC team, while at the same time enjoying seven straight trips to the NCAA championship tournament. MatchPointOhio is run by two Bobcat fans, John Thorndike and Cricket Jones. ------------------------------------ The MPO BlogThe Worst Thing Another Team Could Do To Ohio University and Virginia Commonwealth Did It

[For photos of the scrimmage, click on 2010 Match Photos in the Sidebar.] The team has been busy, as Ryan announced at the Convo yesterday, having put in twenty-two practices in the last fourteen days. The annual Green & White Scrimmage, which kicks off the season, was a chance for the starting lineup to take on the new players, plus Leah, Kyle The Cannon, and a member of the OU men’s club team. But players shifted back and forth, with Liis Kullerkan, Kelly Colyer and Mollie Geske all playing on the “Home” team at times, and Ryan working out a variety of rotations. Lots of choices to be made before the first match, which is only days away: we open against Virginia Commonwealth at eleven in the morning next Friday. VCU, you will remember, was the team that dissed us on their webpage, where they announced that they were coming to Ohio on Friday to play Ohio State—giving no mention of their match against us. Let us crush them, don’t you agree? Most notable moment at the scrimmage? I nominate the six-pack Kelly took off a screaming hit by Sue: square in the face, half knocking her over—though in a second she was on her feet again. As Kelly said after the scrimmage, “Yeah, I took one for the team.” Pure Bobcat spirit. By jersey number, here’s a photo apiece of all our players, starting with #2 Sue Jacobi and ending with #16 Meryl Bender. There are five players new to the team: #3 Lauren Seyller, #4 Marah Farage, #6 Kelly Colyar, #13 Liis Kullerkann, and #14 Mollie Geske. See link below for the rest of this post. The Summer Camp

MatchPointOhio went over to the Convo on Saturday, watched the volleyball camp and took some photos of this year’s recruits. Four of them were there among the other camp players: Mollie Geske and Kelly Colyar, both back row players, and Marah Farage and Lauren Seyller (pronounced Sigh-ler) from the front. Missing was Liis Kullerkann of Estonia, who, like the others, has signed a Letter of Intent and will join the team in August. How did you find out about someone in Estonia? I asked Ryan. “You have to know people,” he said. It was just a taste of the coming season—but it’s going to be a great one. Scrimmage with Marshall

It was the final scrimmage of the spring, and the last of the volleyball we’ll see in the Convo until August. Nine players, Meghan and Kyle coaching. lots of good play. Plenty of digs, dives and accurate passes. Here’s Nicole, focused on two hard-driven balls: Art Ricker’s Photos from Cincinatti

Busy spring. It took me a week to get my photos up from Louisville, and now it’s two weeks since Art Ricker, Lexie’s grandfather, sent these photos from the scrimmages in Cincinatti the week before. His focus is often on Lexie, and here’s a series of three: Nice jump set by Michelle: A step ahead of the blockers: The ball went through: you can see it blurred behind the antenna. I notice that Lexie tucks her left arm in at the end of her shots, the same as Ellen. It worked for our All-American! Here’s a final photo of Faith hitting, with Lexie and Michelle in perfect coverage. See you all at the Convo next Sunday at 2 PM, for the match against Marshall. | |
